INTERVIEW

>>1. Tell us a little bit about yourself, your past and how you started djing at Bar25

I am originally from Bavaria in the South of Germany. I came to electronic music quite late, in my youth i was more into Punk and Hardcore stuff. During my time at university, i made lots of parties and concerts in a small club on the campus and that´s where i started DJing. I came to Berlin in 2006 and started managing the Sender Records label, which i did for over 3 years.

My Bar25 residency began totally by accident in the same year. My friend Jake the Rapper was set to play there, and as another DJ had to cancel his gig, the Bar25 booker asked him if he knew someone to replace him. He called me, and the rest of the story is a bit too long to tell, i guess.

At the moment i am doing the label management for a new label from Zurich in Switzerland, called Hive Audio. It is the label of the Hive Club there, the concept is to bring out fresh music from young swiss artists. Also, on every release you will find remixes by well-known international artists.

> > 2. Your podcast surely has a lovely unique and approachable vibe, what would you say drives and defines you as a dj?

Good to hear that, thanks. Anyway, hard question....The biggest aim of every artist, no matter if DJ, painter or conductor, should be to develop an own, distinctive and irresistible style.

It is really sad how loveless most DJs play these days. Of course, it seems that nowadays it has become easy for everyone to be a DJ. But this is only true for the technical aspect. A good audience feels if there is DJ playing with heart and soul, if he really is into the music with all that he has, or if he´s just someone who is mixing some 192 kbps mp3 tracks he found on w-ki.com. A dedicated DJ would not do the latter, i think.

Sometimes before a gig i spend hours going through all of my records to find that one special 12" that will fit perfectly to time and place of the next set. Without that, i would not feel like a DJ anymore.

> > 3. If you could only mix 2 records for one last mix for the rest of your life - which 2 records would you pick and why.

One would definitely be Ada´s "Luckycharm" on Areal Records. It was the first Techno 12" i bought and i still love it and play it here and then. A timeless classic that means a lot to me. The last record would be "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. It is one of the best songs ever written, and if i go, there has to be some drama. Also, i lost a bet to a friend of mine some years ago, and i still have to sing this song in public, wearing Freddy Mercury´s original suite. So i could also even that debt.

> > 4. You recently spent some time out in Spain, what were the main differences between there and Berlin and where would you say the best place in the world for your kind of music is?

Yes i spent 3 months in Alicante during the winter, i also was playing in Valencia and Barcelona. Of course it is hard to get along in a city like Alicante, when you are used to Berlin. There is almost no subculture and therefore, of course, also not too many people to hang out with. But i had quite a good time with Towie there and getting out of Berlin sometimes is certainly not the worst thing, especially in winter time. At some point Berlin can be too much for you and you need a bit of distance.

For me as a DJ, there is simply no place like Bar25. It´s the place where i can play exactly the kind of music in the way i want to, having an audience that is not narrow-minded at all and joins you enthusiastically through your whole set, no matter which way you want to go.

> > 5. Thanks for your podcast and this little chat, we hope to hear more from you soon, whats next for Mutlu?

Last week my first track, which i made together with Franziskus Sell from Format B, came out on Formatik Records. In the near future i want to work on my own stuff and maybe in the end of the year there will be another Sell & Mutlu record on Formatik.
